Preparing Educators for the Artificial Intelligence Era: Digital Competencies, Pedagogical Readiness, and Ethical Challenges in Education

Abstract

This narrative review examined how educators can be prepared for the artificial intelligence (AI) era by synthesising recent scholarship across three interrelated domains: digital competencies, pedagogical readiness, and ethical challenges. Peer-reviewed studies, systematic reviews, and competency frameworks published mainly between 2022 and 2026 were analysed thematically to identify converging patterns and persistent gaps. The review found that teacher preparedness extends beyond technical skill to encompass critical evaluation, prompt literacy, and human-AI collaboration, and that established models such as TPACK have been expanded to incorporate AI-specific and ethical knowledge. Readiness was shown to depend on professional development, self-efficacy, institutional support, and digital leadership, while uneven infrastructure widened disparities in low-resource settings. Ethical concerns, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, academic integrity, and the erosion of learner autonomy, emerged as central to responsible integration. The review concluded that preparing educators requires integrated frameworks linking competence, pedagogy, and ethics, supported by sustained training and context-sensitive policy.
